Dansey’s Pass

Royal Wulff

Chapter 8

Random Memories

He was the most dedicated and knowledgeable flyfisher I have ever known, passionate about his fishing, he had a collection of hundreds of books on the subject and was ever willing to share his knowledge and help a beginner.

Graham Squire, known affectionately as Squizzy, was a sergeant-major in the Australian army & specialised in mapping He had the good fortune to be posted to U.K. and also New Guinea during his time in the army.

When Australia gave aid to New Guinea, one of the promises made was to create a complete set of charts.

He recounts the time when he was appointed to host the New Guinea minister whose portfolio included water conservation. The Australian army had been responsible for selecting the site of the new dam which included a hydro-electric generating plant.

The minister was suitably impressed and when Squizzy mentioned that there was another suitable site for a similar project downstream, the minister replied “That would be of no use, all of the electricity will be gone from the water once this dam uses it.”

Finding the correct reply had Squiz completely stumped. As he related to me, “I couldn’t explain the technical workings of the Hydro scheme as it would cause the minister to lose face; all I could do was quickly divert his attention to another feature.”

On another occasion whilst driving home from a horse racing function with a local doctor who was behind the wheel, a native youngster ran out in front of the vehicle. The child was hit by the car and the doctor braked with the intention of giving help. Graham vigorously warned him not to get out of the car, but to drive on, callous as it may seem.

The good doctor would not listen, mentioning it was his duty to render aid he exited the car and went to the child. Fortunately the lad was alive, although suffering from some obvious injuries with a goodly amount of blood noticeable.

A group of adults came running to the scene and proceeded to lay about the doctor with sticks until they were satisfied that justice had been carried out. It was the native “eye for an eye” principle.

Squizzy was noted for his recipe for pickled trout, which without a doubt was a gastronomic and connoisseur’s delight. When our group of friends, called loosely “The Rules Point Piscators,” set off on our annual 10 day trip to the Murrumbidgee River at Rules Point, Squiz would include the necessary ingredients and providing fishing was bountiful, would keep a few fat fish for the delicacy.

After the trout was filleted and all bones removed, he would slice the fillets into strips and place them in a large bowl. The pickling mixture was poured over the flesh, making sure all were covered; the bowl was sealed with “gladwrap” and refrigerated for two or three days.

The pickling mixture is listed here for those anglers who are interested enough to experiment. The recipe is suitable for all types of fish.
